In order to further improve students' practical ability and comprehensive quality, and let them intuitively understand the operation status of the meteorological business department, according to the teaching plan, from July 21 to 27, a team of 158 undergraduates and teachers from the College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University went to Hexi, Gansu. A 7-day off-campus comprehensive internship was carried out along the corridors of Wuwei, Jinchang, and Zhangye.

       On the morning of July 21st, the off-campus comprehensive internship departure ceremony was held at the Alumni Square of Chengguan Campus. Yang Yi, deputy dean of the College, and Huang Yu, deputy secretary of the Party Committee, made mobilization speeches, repeatedly emphasizing discipline and safety issues. During the internship, all teachers and students will be tested their body temperature three times a day, and every night will be checked to ensure their health and safety. Every student should obey the arrangement, act in an orderly manner, and be diligent in learning and asking.

       During the 7-day trip, teachers and students visited Wushaoling National Climate Reference Station, Wuwei Desert Ecology and Agrometeorological Experiment Station, Wuwei City Meteorological Bureau, Minqin National Climate Reference Station, Minqin County Meteorological Bureau, Jinchang City Meteorological Bureau, Jinchang City Jinchuan Science and Technology Museum, Zhangye National Climate Observatory and other places. They have learned about conventional meteorological element observation instruments and principles, new instruments and research content, the impact of meteorology on agricultural production, artificial rainfall, weather consultation and many other knowledges. In addition, all teachers and students have also carried out field observation at Wushaoling National Climate Reference Station, Wuwei Desert Ecology and Agrometeorological Experiment Station, etc. They used handheld automatic weather station, portable automatic weather station and other instruments to collect meteorological element data of different underlying surfaces. During the internship, students raised questions they encountered at any time, and shared their learning experience in a study group. Teachers and staff promptly answered their questions, commented and checked their internship report. Everyone worked hard to apply the knowledge learned from the classroom and textbooks to this internship.

       During the internship, the staff of the local meteorological department told the students the story of taking root in the Northwest and dedicating to the meteorological career, encouraging them to temper their hard skills, bravely climb the peak of science, and contribute their youthful wisdom to the meteorological industry of the motherland. All teachers and students also visited the Gaotai Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army West Route Army Memorial Hall to gain insights into the historical background and revolutionary deeds of the West Route Army and comprehend the heroic spirit of the soldiers of the West Route Army that 'revolutionary ideals are above the sky' and 'people's interests are above everything', which has inspired everyone's patriotism and aspirations to serve the country.

       At the same time, to further strengthen the bureau-university cooperation, during this internship, the Atmospheric Science Teaching Practice Base of Lanzhou University was listed in Wuwei Meteorological Bureau and Jinchang Meteorological Bureau. At the Wuwei City Meteorological Bureau, teachers and students of the College of Atmospheric Sciences and the leadership team of the Wuwei City Meteorological Bureau and some experts had a discussion. The two parties have discussed how to integrate the advantages of the discipline construction and talent intelligence of the College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University with the Wuwei National Climate Observatory's advantages in the Earth System Comprehensive Observatory, research-oriented business platform, ecological and climate service platform, and so on. A number of cooperation intentions have been initially reached in areas such as joint research on core technologies, establishment of a mechanism for technical personnel exchange and joint training of graduate students, data resource sharing, and scientific research cooperation.
