Meteorological Observation Experiment
In the hot summer, there is a group of people who actively participate in various summer activities at Lanzhou University, either competing on the field or participating in scientific research trips to "chase the atmosphere" on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. They pay attention to climate change, allowing knowledge and practice to collide and spark new sparks, inspiring passion for science in practice.
In order to promote the collaboration between science and education and enhance the professional competence of undergraduate students majoring in atmospheric science, the first National Undergraduate Weather Forecasting Skills Competition for Atmospheric Science was recently held at Lanzhou University. 19 teams and 95 participants from 14 universities including National University of Defense Technology and Ocean University of China participated in the competition, which consisted of two parts: weather map analysis and operation, and short-term weather forecast production. After intense competition, two teams from Lanzhou University won the first prize in the team competition.
In the first national joint internship and scientific investigation activity for undergraduate students majoring in atmospheric science, a joint internship team of undergraduate students majoring in atmospheric science from multiple universities across the country started from Lanzhou University and went to Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Observatory, Xining National Meteorological Station, Haibei Prefecture Meteorological Bureau Business Platform, Tongren City Meteorological Business Platform, and Huangnan New Generation Weather Radar Station. Under the guidance of the new generation weather radar, they predicted weather, conducted observation experiments, and stimulated their enthusiasm for science in practice. Through on-site learning of meteorological knowledge, they felt the charm of atmospheric science, enhanced the knowledge reserve, professional literacy, and practical ability of meteorological students in the new era.
In this internship, I learned about meteorological business knowledge and personally experienced the complexity and importance of meteorological forecasting. I followed experienced forecasters to analyze satellite cloud images, radar data, and short-term forecasts, which gave me a deeper understanding of meteorological business. During the internship, I not only learned theoretical knowledge, but also gained a new understanding of the application of meteorological observation and other knowledge. I also learned about the profound impact of meteorological services on agriculture, transportation, urban planning and other fields. This internship not only improved my professional skills, but also stimulated my enthusiasm for applying meteorological knowledge in daily life, "said Yang Yuelin, a student at Lanzhou University.
During the visit, I learned how to use professional instruments for meteorological data collection and analysis, and realized the rigor and importance of meteorological work. Visiting the Atomic City Memorial Hall made me deeply aware of the tremendous efforts made by the older generation of scientists for the national scientific cause, which further strengthened my determination to contribute to the country's scientific and technological progress, "said a student in the basic theory class of atmospheric science at the school.
