In the context of global warming, major natural disasters around the world are increasing, causing serious economic losses and casualties. Due to the special geographical environment, my country is severely affected by meteorological disasters, among which drought and flood disasters are particularly prominent. Therefore, monthly-seasonal climate forecasts focusing on drought and flood forecasting have always been a major demand for national development. However, the accuracy of existing climate model forecasts is far from meeting actual needs. The fundamental reason for the inaccurate climate prediction lies in the lack of basic theory of climate dynamics.
“Three-pattern decomposition of global atmospheric circulation” is the original research result made by Professor Hu Shujuan of the College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University and the famous Chinese meteorologist Chou Jifan in the field of atmospheric circulation dynamics. “Three-pattern decomposition of global atmospheric circulation” is based on the basic facts that the actual atmospheric circulation has the Rossby wave in the middle and high latitudes and the Hadley and Walker circulations in the low latitudes. “Three-pattern decomposition of global atmospheric circulation” quantitatively puts forward the new definitions of global horizontal, meridian and latitude circulation for the first time, and originally develops the three-pattern decomposition model of global atmospheric circulation. It constructs the theory of global large-scale circulation dynamics equations and forms a complete new theoretical framework of climate dynamics, laying a theoretical foundation for improving and enhancing my country’s climate prediction on the monthly-seasonal time scale.
Recently, this result was published in Science CHINA: Earth Sciences, a high-level academic journal in my country under the title “Theory of three-pattern decomposition of global atmospheric circulation”. Lanzhou University was the first to complete the paper, and Professor Hu Shujuan was the first author and the first corresponding author of the paper.
In recent years, the research team of Professor Hu Shujuan has published series of research results related to this theory in international academic journals such as Climate Dynamics and Geophysical Research Letters. These studies were jointly funded by the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
