On the afternoon of September 19, the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and the Western Ecological Security Provincial and Ministerial Collaborative Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Collaborative Center) jointly held a meeting on the development of atmospheric science disciplines in the Guanyun Building. Huang Jianping, an academician of the CAS Member, and the director of the Collaborative Center, Zhang Lei, deputy director, members of the leadership of the Institute, department (deputy) directors, and relevant staff attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Tian Xulong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College.

Before the meeting, Tian Xulong led the study of the spirit of the 10th Party Congress of Lanzhou University. He clarified the historical position and era coordinates of the College, proposed strategic goals for discipline construction and development, as well as guiding ideology, goals and tasks for future work.
The meeting focused on the high-quality development of ecological security and atmospheric science disciplines in the western region, and participants exchanged and discussed topics such as ecological security, atmospheric science discipline construction, and interdisciplinary integration. The meeting pointed out that the discipline of atmospheric science at Lanzhou University has a good foundation and has made gratifying progress in the fifth round of discipline evaluation. It has its own characteristics and advantages in disciplines such as drought and semi-arid change research, weather and climate prediction, and has achieved a series of important results in talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, and other aspects. With high-quality meteorological development, it empowers local economic and social development. Significant contributions have been made to the modernization of meteorology and the high-quality development of the meteorological industry.
At the meeting, Huang Jianping introduced the development process and achievements of the collaborative center. He stated that the ecological security in the western region is a national ecological security barrier, which is related to the sustainable development of China's economy and society stability. We need to fully leverage the advantages of our university's relevant disciplines such as atmospheric science, ecology, grass science, geography, and high-level research platforms to serve the national strategy, focus on the western region, and address the core scientific issues of regional ecological security in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Loess Plateau, and arid and semi-arid desert areas of China. We should face the major needs of the country, region, and industry, gather advantageous resources, carry out joint research on environmental and climate effects, climate change, desertification control, and other aspects, and strive to make important contributions to the sustainable development of the western region's economy and society, border stability, national ecological security, and the common prosperity of all ethnic groups. At the same time, it is of great significance to promote the construction of our university's atmospheric science discipline.
Dean Tian Wenshou summarized the achievements of the college in recent years and analyzed the current development opportunities and challenges. He stated that the atmospheric discipline aims at major national needs, closely follows the international academic forefront, conducts research on major scientific issues, undertakes multiple national key projects, and has made significant progress in discipline construction. However, there are still many shortcomings in the teaching staff, national level major scientific research projects and awards, national level scientific research platform support, and the ability to overcome 'bottleneck' technologies. We should concentrate our efforts, integrate resources and work together to prepare for the establishment of a national key laboratory. We should apply for the the Belt and Road International Major Scientific Project for Environmental and Climate Disaster Monitoring and Warning and national field stations, actively apply for the construction of a master's (doctor's) degree in meteorology and a doctor's degree in 'Telesensing Science and Technology', and actively promote the discipline construction of atmospheric science to achieve new and greater development.
Tian Xulong stated that the College and the collaborative center should further enhance their political standing, focus on national strategic needs and the forefront of international competition, and contribute to the construction of a security barrier in the western region with great efforts; The College should fully leverage its disciplinary characteristics and advantages, make up for its development shortcomings, overcome difficulties, coordinate resources, and create a new highland for cultivating high-quality innovative talents; We need to further unify our thinking and efforts to jointly promote the construction of atmospheric discipline with the spirit of the College's excellent tradition of striving and creating brilliance over the past 65 years.
The meeting discussed the establishment of a collaborative center party branch, SACOL station, and other field station management matters.
