On November 23, the first "Smart Meteorology" Undergraduate Programming Competition, jointly organized by the Office of Academic Affairs, the Department of Student Affairs, the University Youth League Committee, and the College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University, came to a successful conclusion. With the core purpose of "promoting learning and innovation through competition," the competition not only provided a platform for all undergraduate students to demonstrate their programming skills and innovative thinking but also promoted the deep integration of information technology and meteorological science, laying a solid practical foundation for cultivating interdisciplinary "Smart Meteorology" talents.

Since its launch, the competition, with its distinctive interdisciplinary features and practice-oriented approach, quickly attracted widespread attention and enthusiastic response from various schools across the university. A total of 156 undergraduate students from 14 schools, including the College of Atmospheric Sciences, the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Cuiying Honors College, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, enthusiastically registered for the competition. Participants spanned all year levels from freshmen to seniors, fully demonstrating Lanzhou University students’ strong interest in interdisciplinary innovation and their active scientific exploration spirit. Whether it was the in-depth exploration of professional scenarios by students majoring in meteorology-related fields or the cross-border thinking collisions brought by non-meteorology students, both added rich innovative vitality to the competition.

The competition featured two core tracks, Fortran and Python, focusing on practical application scenarios such as meteorological data analysis and weather forecasting, testing the participants’ ability to use computational thinking to solve complex meteorological problems. After intense preliminary and final rounds, and strict evaluation by a judging committee composed of university experts, various awards were announced for each track: in the Fortran track, there were 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes, and 13 third prizes; in the Python track, there were 6 first prizes, 12 second prizes, and 19 third prizes. The award-winning contestants stood out with their solid programming skills, innovative algorithm designs, and profound understanding of meteorological operational scenarios, fully demonstrating the comprehensive strength of Lanzhou University undergraduates in interdisciplinary application fields.

After the competition results were announced, the organizing committee held an awards ceremony. Leaders and guests including Zhao Pengfei, Deputy Director of the Office of Academic Affairs; Wang Ruina, Deputy Secretary of the University Youth League Committee; Tian Xulong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Atmospheric Sciences; and Yang Yi, Associate Dean of the College of Atmospheric Sciences, attended the ceremony and presented awards to the winning students. Deputy Director Zhao Pengfei and Secretary Tian Xulong delivered speeches at the ceremony. They fully affirmed the remarkable achievements of the competition in promoting interdisciplinary integration and cultivating innovative talents, highly praised the solid knowledge, innovative spirit, and striving attitude demonstrated by all participants, and encouraged the students to take this competition as the starting point of a new journey, to continue maintaining their enthusiasm for scientific exploration, to delve deeper into their professional fields, and to bravely scale the heights of science and technology.
