On the morning of November 24th, the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between Lanzhou University and the National Climate Center to jointly build the National Key Laboratory for Monitoring and Early Warning of the Silk Road Environment and Drought Climate (hereinafter referred to as the 'Laboratory') was held in Beijing. Chen Zhenlin, Secretary of the Party Group and Director of the China Meteorological Administration, and Ma Xiaojie, Secretary of the Party Committee of Lanzhou University, attended the signing ceremony. Chao Qingchen, Director of the National Climate Center, and Chen Ximeng, Vice President of Lanzhou University, respectively signed the agreement on behalf of both parties.

Chen Zhenlin affirmed the recent achievements of the working group formed by both sides. He stated that the China Meteorological Administration attaches great importance to cooperation with Lanzhou University, and the two sides have a good foundation for cooperation. The numerous outstanding talents trained have played an important role in the modernization of meteorological construction. The construction of laboratories is an important measure to implement the major decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee, which is of great significance to the implementation of major strategies such as the service guarantee of jointly building the 'the Belt and Road', supporting the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin, and the western development in the new era. It is also an important measure to implement the Outline of High Quality Meteorological Development (2022-2035) and deepen the cooperation between the bureau and the university in the new era. We hope that both sides can take this opportunity to leverage the resource advantages of strong alliances, concentrate their efforts to overcome difficulties, and provide strong technological support for the environmental security of China's arid and semi-arid regions and the Silk Road.

Ma Xiaojie thanks the Director of Meteorology of China for his care and support to Lanzhou University over the years. He stated that Lanzhou University has a profound accumulation and outstanding disciplinary advantages in the field of earth sciences. The two sides have strengthened cooperation in scientific research and talent cultivation, and multiple scientific research achievements have been transformed and applied in meteorological business. It is hoped that the two sides will use the laboratory platform to strengthen complementary advantages, focus on overcoming difficulties, promote scientific and technological innovation and achievements transformation as a whole, build a monitoring and early warning system for major environmental and climate disasters around the major frontier issues of the Silk Road environment and drought climate monitoring and early warning, provide scientific and technological support for the country to build a solid security barrier for the Silk Road, maintain regional social stability and development, and contribute to accelerating the construction of a meteorological power and promoting the construction of Chinese path to modernization.
Condolences to Alumni Academician Shen Xueshun
After the meeting, Ma Xiaojie and his delegation went to the Earth System Numerical Prediction Center of the China Meteorological Administration to visit Shen Xueshun, the newly elected academician of the CAE Member, and attend the research exchange forum. Ma Xiaojie, on behalf of the university, sent his alma mater's blessings to Shen Xueshun and exchanged information on the recent development of the university. He said that being elected as an academician of the CAE Member was not only a personal honor, but also the pride of all teachers, students and alumni of his alma mater Lanzhou University. He hoped that Academician Shen Xueshun would continue to care about and support the construction and development of his alma mater, and work together to contribute more to building a strong country in education, science and technology, talent and Chinese path to modernization.
Shen Xueshun thanks his alma mater for their training. He stated that Lanzhou University has always attached great importance to the teaching of professional basic knowledge, which laid a solid foundation for his later academic career. Starting from studying at my alma mater, I have been drawing nourishment from it for over 30 years. In my future work, I will definitely carry forward the fine traditions of Lanzhou University, soar high in my scientific research, achieve more and better results, give back to my alma mater, and give back to society.
Research Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center
Gong Jiandong, Director of the Numerical Forecasting Center and alumnus of the 1989 Weather Dynamics major, and Li Hongshan, Secretary and Deputy Director of the Center's Party Committee and alumnus of the 1992 Administrative Management major, had in-depth exchanges with Ma Xiaojie on talent cultivation, scientific research cooperation, and collaborative development of numerical forecasting innovation.
