The Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Center was founded in 1971, formerly known as the Weather Analysis and Forecasting Laboratory and the Meteorological Observation Laboratory. In the process of disciplinary development, atmospheric chemistry laboratories and atmospheric numerical simulation laboratories have been successively established. At present, the center mainly consists of four undergraduate teaching laboratories (Weather Analysis and Forecasting Laboratory, Atmospheric Detection and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory, and Atmospheric Numerical Simulation Laboratory) and several off campus internship and training bases. The central experiment covers an area of over 5300 square meters (including an indoor area of over 1800 square meters), including a standard weather consultation room and a meteorological observation field. The center mainly undertakes the college's experimental internship courses, with experimental projects covering more than 10 courses in 2 majors. It has established a "4+4+3" characteristic experimental practice teaching system with 4 directions (atmospheric detection and remote sensing, weather analysis and forecasting, atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric numerical simulation), 4 types (basic training experiments, comprehensive application experiments, innovative research experiments, virtual simulation experiments), and 3 forms (imparting experimental teaching, open and autonomous experimental teaching, research-based experimental teaching).
In the past five years, the center has invested more than 8 million yuan in supplementing and improving instruments and equipment, as well as upgrading and renovating experimental platforms. In addition, the center has completed more than 20 teaching and research projects with a total budget of over 1.5 million yuan, won more than 10 provincial, ministerial, and university level teaching achievement awards, published more than 10 papers on teaching reform and experimental technology reform, and trained more than 1000 undergraduate students. After being awarded the title of "Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching in Gansu Province" in 2009, the center has continuously strengthened cooperation between the bureau and the university, as well as intercollegiate cooperation with domestic sister universities, leveraging its own advantages. In 2015, it successfully hosted the first national joint field practice activity for undergraduate students majoring in atmospheric science. In 2023, it successfully held a joint internship with multiple universities in the western region. Since 2018, it has held an annual on campus weather forecasting skills competition. It has gradually developed into an innovative talent training base for national public meteorology, safety meteorology, resource meteorology, and environmental meteorology, a demonstration base for promoting and applying experimental teaching results, and a base for popularizing atmospheric science knowledge and education.
