On October 31st, the China Meteorological Administration's weather forecast technology achievement pilot base (hereinafter referred to as the 'pilot base') organized a certification review meeting for the business transformation of weather forecast technology achievements for the year 2023. The achievement transformation project of 'Application of AO/NAO Index in Cold Wave Extension Forecast' completed under the leadership of Professor Li Yan from the College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University has passed the certification of the pilot base business transformation.
The achievement transformation project relies on the National Natural Science Foundation of China's general project 'Research on the Wave Current Interaction and Its Relationship with Polar Front Jet during the Ular Mountains Blocking High Pressure Process'. The study obtained the NAO index changes, main weather modes, and cold air invasion paths and locations of cold air and cold waves in the 10-30 days before the occurrence of nationwide cold air and cold waves. The experts in the evaluation of the pilot base unanimously agree that this achievement can provide strong support for cold air (cold wave) forecasting, help solve business difficulties and needs, and promote business optimization. During the transformation testing process, the achievement transformation unit and the achievement application unit closely cooperate, jointly improve the transformation results based on business needs, and integrate with existing business systems to improve the accuracy of forecasting.
On November 6th, the Forecasting and Network Department of the China Meteorological Administration issued a reply from the Forecasting Department on agreeing to the business transformation and application of weather forecasting technology achievements (Qi Yu Han [2023] No. 85), agreeing to put the technology achievements into the business application of the National Meteorological Center.
The successful implementation of this technology achievement transformation project is an effective practice for the College of Atmospheric Science to accelerate the construction of Double First Class, promote the integration of science and education, and technological innovation. It is also an important carrier for the college to implement the cooperation between the bureau and the school in the new era and the new journey, improve the high-quality development of meteorological talents, and promote the development of weather forecasting business through basic theoretical research, contributing to the high-quality development of meteorology and the modernization of meteorological industry.
