On the morning of May 20th, the university held a ceremony to appoint Academician Shen Xueshun as an adjunct professor at the Chengguan Campus. Li Hongshan, the Party Secretary of the Earth System Numerical Forecast Center of the China Meteorological Administration, Ma Xiaojie, the Party Secretary of Lanzhou University, Yang Yongping, the President of Lanzhou University and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Huang Jianping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chen Ximeng, the Vice President of Lanzhou University, attended the ceremony. Ma Xiaojie presided over the ceremony.
Ma Xiaojie extended a warm welcome to Academician Shen Xueshun and expressed gratitude to the Earth System Numerical Prediction Center of the China Meteorological Administration for their support to Lanzhou University. He noted that Academician Shen's journey from a Lanzhou University student to a leading figure in meteorology vividly embodies the university's motto of "Self-Improvement and Distinctiveness". The appointment of Academician Shen to Lanzhou University holds significant importance for advancing atmospheric science disciplines, better serving national strategies, and addressing critical technological bottlenecks. Ma expressed hope that the College of Atmospheric Sciences would seize this opportunity to develop strategic plans and elevate disciplinary development to new heights. He also emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration with the Earth System Numerical Prediction Center of the China Meteorological Administration, aiming to jointly enhance scientific research and talent cultivation in relevant fields.
Yang Yongping outlined the recent developments at the university, particularly at the College of Atmospheric Sciences, and highly commended Academician Shen Xueshun's outstanding contributions to the innovative advancement of China's numerical weather prediction models. He expressed hopes that the College of Atmospheric Sciences and atmospheric disciplines would leverage Academician Shen's joining Lanzhou University to: 1) uphold the principle of "adhering to fundamentals while innovating" to accelerate disciplinary development; 2) maintain "high-end leadership" in building research teams; 3) adhere to "serving development" by jointly establishing innovation hubs; 4) adopt a "simultaneous approach of attracting and nurturing talent" to enhance team quality and advance all endeavors. He emphasized that the university would fully support the academician's team in their work, with both the university and the college actively integrating resources in discipline development, talent cultivation, and scientific innovation to ensure the academician's smooth academic engagement.
Shen Xueshun fondly reminisced about his academic years at Lanzhou University and over two decades of scientific research after returning to China. He expressed gratitude to his alma mater and mentors for not only imparting knowledge and skills, but also cultivating his spirit of "perseverance, competitive courage, and collaborative competence." He pledged to give back to his alma mater by deepening his expertise in the field, advancing alongside young students to scale academic heights. Committed to fulfilling his teaching mission of "transmitting knowledge, guiding learning, and resolving doubts," he vowed to help students grow into visionary talents with capabilities and patriotic dedication. Additionally, he pledged to actively build communication bridges, offering suggestions and contributing to the university's development.
Li Hongshan highly praised the strategic significance of this appointment. He pointed out that numerical forecasting is the "chips" in the meteorological field and a national-level "bottleneck" project. Academician Shen Xueshun has dedicated over two decades to advancing numerical forecasting, driving China's leapfrog development from nonexistence to excellence. Shen's joining Lanzhou University represents concrete measures for integrated advancement in science, education, and talent cultivation. It also serves as a crucial bridge connecting Lanzhou University with the China Meteorological Administration, particularly the Earth System Numerical Prediction Center. We look forward to deeper and broader collaborations between both parties in areas like shared research platforms, joint talent development, and technological model innovation, achieving resource sharing and complementary advantages.

【Introduction to Academician Shen Xueshun】
Shen Xueshun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a researcher at the Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration, a doctoral supervisor, one of the first batch of outstanding meteorological talents of the China Meteorological Administration, a national advanced worker, and the head of a national key field scientific and technological innovation team. He obtained his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from our university in June 1987, June 1990 and June 1996 respectively. He has long been engaged in the research of numerical weather forecasting and business system engineering, and has achieved systematic innovative results in the basic algorithms of numerical models, global and regional high-resolution numerical forecasting methods, etc. He presided over the establishment of GRAPES, China's first independently controllable and complete regional/global integrated numerical weather forecasting business system, which enabled China to break away from its reliance on foreign numerical forecasting technologies and achieve comprehensive and regular application in central, national, provincial and municipal (prefectural) meteorological stations. He has made outstanding contributions to meteorological disaster prevention, mitigation and relief as well as meteorological support for major national events. He presided over the construction of the prototype system of China's new generation of weather and climate integrated high-precision and scalable numerical forecasting model, achieving international parity in the research and development of seamless weather and climate forecasting models. In 2017, he was awarded the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Chinese Meteorological Society. In 2007 and 2020, he received the Second Prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress and was honored with the first National Outstanding Engineer Team Award.
