On June 20, the strategic development consultation meeting for the atmospheric sciences discipline at Lanzhou University was held at the Chengguan Campus. The event brought together prominent experts in the field, including Professor Mu Mu from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Fudan University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Professor Dai Yongjiu from the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University, CAS Academician; Professor Zhu Tong from the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Peking University, CAS Academician; Professor Huang Jianping from the College of Atmospheric Sciences at Lanzhou University, CAS Academician; Professor Shen Xueshun, Chief Scientist at the Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration and also affiliated with the College of Atmospheric Sciences at Lanzhou University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Researcher Zhou Tianjun, Deputy Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS.Dr. Zhang Qiang, a researcher at the Lanzhou Institute of Arid Meteorology, China Meteorological Administration; Dr. Ma Yaoming, a researcher at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dr. Qie Xiushu, a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dr. Wang Fan, dean of the College of Marine Sciences and director of the Institute of Oceanology at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dr. Chen Qi, Boya Young Scholar and researcher at the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University; and nine other experts and scholars attended the meeting online and offline. Yang Yongping, president of Lanzhou University, attended the conference, which was chaired by Tian Xulong, Party Secretary of the College of Atmospheric Sciences.

Yang Yongping expressed his gratitude to the academicians and experts for their insightful guidance on the development of atmospheric sciences, and shared his earnest expectations for the college’s future. He emphasized that the College of Atmospheric Sciences should effectively transform resources and boldly break through self-imposed limitations, swiftly turning the valuable insights and strategic recommendations from these leading experts into concrete roadmaps, action plans, and timelines for disciplinary advancement. The college should focus on the core consensus achieved during this meeting, promptly organize findings, conduct in-depth analysis, establish precise alignments, and systematically implement each task—internalizing the committee’s strategic guidance into specific foundations for adjusting the college’s 15th Five-Year Plan, refining research directions, and optimizing resource allocation. At the same time, it is hoped that the establishment of the Strategic Advisory Committee for Atmospheric Sciences will serve as a vital link to deepen collaboration between the discipline and academicians, experts, and their teams. Together, we aim to build high-level platforms, jointly cultivate top-tier innovative talents, and establish an integrated chain encompassing research, education, application, and industry—enabling more scientific breakthroughs to take root and flourish in western China.

At the meeting, Huang Zhongwei, Dean of the College of Atmospheric Sciences, delivered a report covering the college’s general profile, disciplinary development, strategic vision, goals, and key initiatives. He systematically reviewed the discipline’s historical foundation, current strengths, and distinctive features, with a particular focus on its contributions to meeting major national strategic needs, supporting regional development, and innovating talent cultivation models.
