Professor Zhang Lei Was Awarded the Honour of the First National Meteorological Teacher

       On September 7th, at the symposium to celebrate the 34th Teacher's Day, the China Meteorological Administration announced the list of the first national meteorological teaching masters. Seven teachers from China gained the honour, Zhang Lei, a professor from the School of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University was included. Liu Yaming, director and secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group of the China Meteorological Administration, attended the meeting and presented awards to the award-winning teachers.

 

       It is reported that the selection plan of national meteorological teaching masters has been implemented since July 2018. It will be carried out every two years and the number of teacher selected is not more than 10 in principle. Candidates will be evaluated in the principles of highlighting politics, giving first priority to teachers’ morality, emphasizing love for meteorological teaching, and attaching importance to teaching methods, quality and results. As the organizer, the China Meteorological Administration hopes to thoroughly implement the relevant national requirements through the selection of meteorological teaching masters, support the establishment of meteorological majors and meteorological departments, build a pool of meteorological talent, and encourage and guide the majority of meteorological teachers to teach and educate students, to continuously improve the quality of meteorological teaching and personnel training, and strive to build a modern meteorological power.

 
 

Introduction to Professor Zhang Lei:

       Zhang Lei, member of the Communist Party of China, doctor of science, professor, doctoral supervisor, associate dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences, executive deputy director of the Key Laboratory of the Semi-Arid Climate Change Ministry of Education, executive deputy director of the Pan-Tertiary Frontier Science Center for Ecological Environment and Climate Change, council member of China Environmental Sciences Society, member of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Meteorological Society Committee , and editorial board member of professional journals such as Plateau Meteorology. After graduating from meteorology in Lanzhou University in January 1982, he's been a teacher in Lanzhou University. He was the director of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University and a member of the evaluation group of Atmospheric Sciences of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (5th and 6th). He visited and conducted research in Texas A&M University, Cambridge University, Italy International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). He has been teaching and researching on atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment, atmospheric boundary layer and diffusion, atmospheric aerosols and their climatic effects, atmospheric pollution and control. He has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, recruiting masters and doctoral students. He has presided over more than 20 provincial and national projects, published more than 100 papers in academic journals at home and abroad, and presided over topics such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the 973 Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Teaching Research Project of the Ministry of Education. He received the National University Young Teacher Award (2000), Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (1999), Gansu Province Teaching Achievement First Prize (1997), Gansu Province College Cross-Century Discipline Leader (1998), Baosteel Education Fund Excellent Teacher Award (1998), National Excellent Environmental Science and Technology Workers (1999), Virtue Pacesetter of Lanzhou University (2001), “My Favorite Top Ten Teachers”(2009) and many other awards and honorary titles. He enjoy the special government allowance of the State Council.
