Lanzhou University Alumna Professor Pu Zhaoxia is Elected as a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society

       The American meteorological society recently announced the winners and newly elected fellows it will honor during its annual meeting in January 2019. Pu Zhaoxia, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Utah and a distinguished alumna of the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Lanzhou University, was elected to as a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS Fellow). The American Meteorological Society is the most authoritative society of meteorology and atmospheric sciences in the United States. Its members are co-opted annually, and the number of them does not exceed two thousandths of the total number of members of the society, so as to commend the scholars and experts who have made outstanding contributions to the meteorology, ocean, hydrology and other related disciplines of the society over the years. The Society Fellow is a widely recognized lifelong honor.

 
 

Introduction to Professor Pu Zhaoxia:

       Pu Zhaoxia is a lifelong professor and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Utah. From September 1985 to June 1992, she studied in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University and obtained a bachelor's and master's degree in weather dynamics. In 1993, she was invited to work on doctoral thesis at the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP/NOAA) when she was a doctoral student. In 1997, she received a Ph.D. in Sino-US joint training at Lanzhou University. Professor Pu Zhaoxia has long been engaged in satellite and radar data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, ensemble prediction and predictability, adaptive observation and tropical cyclone and its precipitation, atmospheric boundary layer under complex terrain, and has gained remarkable achievements in the above fields. In 2000, she was awarded the “Outstanding Achievement Award” by the Mesoscale Department of the Atmospheric Laboratory of the NASA Goddard Flight Center. In 2011, she was awarded the honorary title of “Dunhuang Award” by the foreign expert of Gansu Provincial Government. In 2012, she was awarded the “Outstanding Achievement Award for Teaching” by the School of Minerals and Earth Sciences of the University of Utah. In recent years, as the chief scientist of the project, she has hosted many important projects such as the US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the General Administration of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the US Navy, the Department of Energy, and the Natural Science Foundation of the United States. More than 70 research papers have been included in the International SCI. She has been invited to make hundreds of invited presentations or conference reports on important international occasions. She is a review expert and research expert of many international SCI journals and magazines. She is one of the well-known young and middle-aged scholars in the field of research on data assimilation, ensemble forecasting and predictability. She is currently the editor of the Journal of Weather and Forecasting of SCI and editor of the Journal of Meteorological Research of SCI(E).
