From October 17 to 18, the Second National Weather Forecast Skills Competition for Undergraduate Students in Atmospheric Science (hereinafter referred to as the "Competition") was successfully concluded in Chengdu, Sichuan. The Competition was hosted by the National Alliance of Meteorological Science and Education Integration, and co-organized by the Civil Aviation Flight University of China, Lanzhou University, the Key Laboratory of Aviation Meteorology of the China Meteorological Administration, and Chengdu University of Information Technology. A total of 110 undergraduate students from 22 teams representing 14 universities, including Lanzhou University, Sun Yat-sen University, Nanjing University, National University of Defense Technology, and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, participated in the Competition. Two teams from the College of Atmospheric Sciences, Lanzhou University, guided by instructors Li Xu and Huang Jinlong, stood out among all participating teams, winning two group second prizes, along with three first prizes, three second prizes, and four third prizes in individual awards. Li Xu and Huang Jinlong received the "Outstanding Instructor Award."

The Competition closely followed the actual practice of weather forecasting, consisting of two parts: weather chart analysis and short-term weather forecast production. It mainly examined the participants’ professional skills in manually analyzing and drawing weather charts, identifying weather systems, conducting synoptic analysis, and performing forecast reasoning. Since the announcement of the Competition, our College actively mobilized and carefully selected participants, ultimately choosing 10 outstanding undergraduate students to represent the College. Before the Competition, systematic training was conducted around the competition content, including multiple rounds of simulation exercises on weather chart drawing and short-term weather forecasting, comprehensively enhancing the participants’ professional competence and practical skills.

Taking this Competition as an opportunity, the College will further strengthen the cultivation of students' practical abilities in weather analysis and forecasting, enhance collaboration with peer institutions and the meteorological industry, and promote the construction of the atmospheric science discipline and its talent training system through "promoting learning and training through competition." In the future, the College will continue to support students' participation in various high-level professional competitions, improve students' comprehensive quality and capabilities, and contribute Lanzhou University's strength to cultivating more top-notch innovative talents that support the high-quality development of the national meteorological cause.
