       For 66 years, we have upheld our original aspirations through wind and rain, and for 20 years, we have been dedicated to learning and striving to create excellence. In 2024, as the first college of atmospheric science in Chinese universities, the College of Atmospheric Sciences at Lanzhou University celebrates its 20th birthday.
       The history of the Atmospheric Science discipline at Lanzhou University can be traced back to the Meteorology Teaching and Research Group established in 1958. In 1971, the Meteorology major was officially founded, with Academician Chou Jifan serving as the director of the teaching and research office; In 1987, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences was established at Lanzhou University, with Academician Chou Jifan as the first department head. In June 2004, Lanzhou University established the first College of Atmospheric Sciences in Chinese universities to promote the faster development of atmospheric science in response to the needs of national meteorological development. Academician Chou Jifan was appointed as the honorary dean, and Academician Huang Jianping was appointed as the first dean. In 2017, the discipline of atmospheric science was selected for the national first-class discipline construction list; In 2022, the discipline of atmospheric science was selected for the second round of national first-class discipline construction list, and the college entered a new era of high-quality development.

       The Party Committee of the college fully leverages the 'dual leaders' effect of the faculty party branch, explores construction models such as 'academicians+branch', 'famous teachers in branch', 'teams in branch', and 'projects in branch', and actively constructs a work matrix of 'Party building and ideological education+teaching and research+education services'. In addition, the deep participation in the second Qinghai Tibet Plateau scientific expedition has been widely reported by the central government and various media, reflecting the Lanzhou University spirit of serving the national strategy and cultivating talents for the country in difficult areas, effectively enhancing the influence and reputation of the discipline, and making outstanding contributions to local economic construction.

Zhang Renhe, a 1977 alumnus of the college, founded the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences at Fudan University. Currently, a complete talent training system for atmospheric science disciplines has been established at Fudan University, from undergraduate, master's, doctoral students to postdoctoral fellows. He once expressed with deep affection, 'Lanzhou University has laid a solid foundation in mathematics and physics for me.
