The Department of Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing currently has 15 faculty and staff members, all of whom hold doctoral degrees. Among them, there are 6 professors (1 outstanding youth, 2 outstanding youth, 1 young director, and 1 national meteorological teaching master), 4 associate professors (1 provincial outstanding youth), 1 lecturer, 1 young researcher, 1 professor level senior laboratory technician, and 2 senior laboratory technicians. The Department of Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing has undertaken basic courses for undergraduate and graduate students, such as Atmospheric Physics, Atmospheric Radiation and Remote Sensing, Radar Meteorology, Satellite Meteorology, Boundary Layer Meteorology, Atmospheric Exploration, Atmospheric Remote Sensing and Applications, and Mathematical Physics Methods in Atmospheric Science. Through the operation and maintenance of the daily observation of the Semi Arid Climate and Environment Observation Station (SACOL) of Lanzhou University and the "the Belt and Road" Climate and Environment Comprehensive Monitoring Station, the Department of Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing has organically combined the frontier research of atmospheric exploration with undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Main research directions: long-term observation experiment of arid and semi-arid climate and environment, assimilation of meteorological data and satellite remote sensing data in arid and semi-arid areas, and "the Belt and Road" comprehensive observation network of climate and environment.

The Department of Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing has led dozens of projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in the past 10 years, including the Outstanding Youth, Outstanding Youth, International Cooperation, General, and Youth Funds; Participated in and undertook multiple projects including the National "973" Program, National Key R&D Program, National Major Instrument Development Program, and Meteorological Industry Program; Obtained over 10 national invention patents, over 20 utility model patents, and 5 software copyrights; The Department of Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing has published over 220 high-level papers in international academic journals as the first and corresponding author, as well as one monograph titled "Observation Principles of Arid Climate Systems", achieving a scientific research achievement transformation of 1.55 million yuan. The SACOL station, which is operated and maintained, was invited to join internationally renowned climate and environmental observation networks such as the Global Energy and Water Cycle Coordinated Observation Program (CEOP), the Global Aerosol Monitoring Network (AERONET), the International Lidar Monitoring Network (MPLNET), and the Asian Aerosol Radiation Monitoring Network (SKYNET) in 2006, 2007, and 2009, respectively. It has been awarded the "National Meteorological Science Popularization Education Base (2010-2014, 2015-2019)" by the China Association for Science and Technology for two consecutive years, and was awarded the "National Excellent Science Education Base" in 2015.
