The Department of Climatology has a total of 14 teaching, research, and experimental personnel, including 8 professors (1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Changjiang Distinguished Scholars, 1 Outstanding Youth, 1 Outstanding Youth, and 1 Young Changjiang Scholar), 2 young researchers, and 4 associate professors. Our department has a complete talent cultivation system that includes undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. The faculty of the entire department is responsible for undertaking undergraduate and graduate professional basic courses such as "Physical Climatology", "Satellite Climatology", "Mathematical Physics Methods", "Principles and Methods of Meteorology", "Global Climate System", etc. They have established the main research directions of semi-arid climate change, oxygen cycle and land cancer, the impact of sand and dust aerosols on semi-arid and climate change, land surface processes in arid and semi-arid regions, climate dynamics and climate prediction theory, weather and climate change and their impacts.
In recent years, the teachers have achieved significant results in teaching and research, publishing a series of original research papers in important international journals such as Nature Climate Change, Reviews of Geophysics, and The Innovation Geoscience. The research results have revealed the spatiotemporal characteristics and feedback mechanisms of semi-arid climate change at regional and global scales; constructed a theoretical system for semi-arid climate change; established a prediction model for semi-arid climate; revealed the three main pathways of direct, indirect, and semi direct effects of dust and aerosols on semi-arid climate, and explicitly proposed the aridification effect of the semi direct effect of dust and aerosols; The Department of Climatology proposed the definitions of global horizontal circulation, meridional circulation, and latitudinal circulation, constructed a three type decomposition model of global atmospheric circulation, and established the theory of large-scale three type circulation dynamic equations. The Department has led one national major scientific research project, one innovation research group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one innovation team of the "Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Plan" of the Ministry of Education, and multiple other national level projects. The Department has successively won honors such as the "National Natural Science Second Prize", "National Innovation Excellence Award", "National Huang Danian style Teacher Team in Universities", and "Gansu Province Science and Technology Progress First Prize".
