A seminar on the progress of the project “Impact and Adaptation of climate change on water resources in the Nile Basin” was held

On July 22, a progress seminar for the key project "Research on the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources in the Nile Basin and Adaptation Strategies" under the national key research and development plan "International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation between Governments" was held in Lanzhou.

The conference was hosted by Lanzhou University. Experts invited to provide guidance included CAS Members, Professor Huang Jianping from Lanzhou University, Researcher Yue Ping from the Lanzhou Arid Meteorological Institute of the China Meteorological Administration, Researcher Liu Benli from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Wang Shanshan from Lanzhou University, and young researcher Tian Lei from Lanzhou University. Over 30 participants attended, including Chinese and Egyptian project leaders, team members, and students. The conference was chaired by Professor Guan Xiaodan, Vice Dean of the College of Atmospheric Sciences at Lanzhou University.

At the meeting, Professor Guan Xiaodan, the Chinese leader of the project, Professor Doaa Amin, the director of the Egyptian Water Resources Research Institute, and team members Asmaa Kamel, Dr. Eatemad Keshta, Professor Jian Jun from Dalian Maritime University, and Associate Professor Hu Jun from Xiamen University reported on the implementation status, important progress, and follow-up work plan of the project since its launch. The expert group has put forward numerous specific guidance opinions on the core goal of climate change affecting water resources in the Nile Basin, the connections and support between various sub projects, representative achievements, etc. The project team members have carefully listened to the expert group's guidance opinions and provided detailed responses and introductions.

Academician Huang Jianping provided a detailed introduction to the experience of China's Yangtze River Basin governance and protection over the years, hoping that the project team can learn from and absorb it, and contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to the governance of the Nile River Basin. Academician Huang Jianping emphasized that members of each project team should continue to coordinate and cooperate in order to make new breakthroughs in data sharing, joint investigations, and visits between young scholars, and strive to build the project into a regional international cooperation model.

On behalf of the project team, Guan Xiaodan expressed gratitude to all experts and scholars for their attendance, exchange, and guidance. He emphasized the need to further deepen the scientific research partnership between Lanzhou University and the Egyptian Water Resources Research Institute, and to work with Xiamen University and Dalian Maritime University to further advance scientific research projects based on the main theme of studying changes in water resources in the Nile River Basin. All research tasks were successfully completed according to the mission objectives.
