On March 24th, the launch meeting of the National Natural Science Foundation of China's major project 'Atmospheric Environment Variations in the Middle and Upper Levels and Their Weather and Climate Disasters', jointly undertaken by Professor Tian Wenshou of Lanzhou University and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University of Information Technology, and other units, was held at the International Academic Exchange Center of Nanjing University Suzhou Campus. At the same time, a meeting was held to report and exchange the achievements of the National Natural Science Foundation of China's major atmospheric discipline research project. More than 70 people, including Academician Wang Huijun from Nanjing University of Information Technology, Academician Tan Zhemin from Nanjing University, Academician Zhu Tong from Peking University, Academician Song Junqiang from the University of National Defense Science and Technology of the People's Liberation Army of China, Academician Zhang Xiaoyi from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Academician Shen Xueshun from the Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration, Executive Deputy Director of the Earth Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Yao Yupeng, Deputy Director of the Earth Science Department Zhang Chaolin, project leaders, and research backbone, attended the meeting. Zhang Chaolin presided over the opening ceremony of the conference, and Tan Zhemin and Yao Yupeng delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

Leader's speech

Traditional atmospheric science research focuses on the troposphere atmosphere, and the changes in the middle and upper atmosphere have not received sufficient attention. The middle and upper atmosphere not only plays an important role in weather and climate change in the troposphere, but also serves as a 'high frontier' for national defense and security. It is urgent to carry out research on the middle and upper atmosphere and its interaction with the troposphere atmosphere. The 'Atmospheric Environment Variations in the Middle and Upper Levels and Their Weather and Climate Disasters' project aims to deepen our understanding of the cutting-edge scientific issue of the middle and upper atmosphere. It reveals the variations in environmental factors such as thermodynamic conditions and chemical composition in the middle and upper atmosphere, as well as their weather and climate disaster effects. The project research can not only promote the integration of various branches within atmospheric science, but also promote the intersection of atmospheric science and space science and other disciplines.
Zhang Xiaoyi presided over the project reporting session. Tian Wenshou reported on the overall situation of the project, elaborating in detail on the research content, research objectives, key scientific issues, and implementation plan of the project. The project leaders of each participating unit reported on the implementation plan of the project.

Each project leader do the reports

After listening to the report on the project and its implementation plan, the attending experts gave full recognition and provided constructive guidance on the scientific objectives, research content, and cooperation and exchange between topics of the project. Experts say that the research results of the project are expected to provide important scientific and technological support and decision-making basis for the effective utilization of space resources, climate change response, and disaster prevention and reduction, better play the supporting role of atmospheric science in the high-quality development of the country, and enhance China's overall level and international influence in this research.

Experts discuss the content of the launch report on major projects

At the end of the meeting, Zhang Chaolin summarized and affirmed the effectiveness of the exchange meeting. He also requested that major project leaders and project leaders widely listen to the suggestions of experts in the field, achieve the overall goals of project formulation, solve core scientific problems, and enhance China's innovation capabilities in basic research.
